OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice.org is a multi-platform and multi-lingual office productivity suite. It is an open-source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. This product is compatible with all other major office suites. Being open source software, it is free to download, use, and distribute.
OpenOffice.org includes many key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. The product is quite dynamic and flexible and works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.
OpenOffice.org is available in more than 45 languages. It is compatible with Solaris, Linux (including PPC Linux), Windows, Mac OS X (X11), and numerous other platforms.
This application is written in C++ programming language along with documented APIs. This source technology introduces the next-stage architecture, allowing use of the suite as separate applications or as embedded components in other applications. Numerous other features are also present including XML-based file formats and other resources. Because of its XML file format OpenOffice.org has easy interoperability for better future development and adoption.
OpenOffice.org uses a dual-licensing scheme for source-code contributions: the LGPL (GNU Lesser General Public License) and SISSL (Sun Industry Standards Source License).
