MailScanner is a highly respected open source e-mail security system providing virus scanner, vulnerability protector and spam tagger.

MailScanner is a generic scanner intending to drive a spam filter and virus scanner and used by MTAs. This software is written in Perl and works well with SendMail and Exim.

MailScanner supports a wide range of anti-virus scanners namely, Sophos, McAfee, F-Prot, F-Secure, CommandAV, InoculateIT, Inoculan, eTrust, Kaspersky, Nod32, AntiVir, BitDefender, RAV, Panda, DrWeb, and ClamAV. It uses SpamAssassin for identifying spam and can effectively handle denial of service attacks.

This open source software detects password-protected zip files and applies filename checking to their contents. MailScanner is quite easy to install, no need of changing the sendmail.cf file.
