MPlayer is a movie and animation player, which runs on a wide range of codecs and file formats including MPEG, DivX, Windows media, Real Audio and Video, QuickTime and Vivo.

A wide range of output drivers supports MPlayer. It works well with X11, Xv, DGA, Open GL, SVGAlib, DirectFB etc. However, other drivers like GGI, SDL, VESA etc. and some low level card-specific drivers like Matrox, 3Dfx and ATI are also supported by MPlayer.

Since most of the drivers support software or hardware scaling, movies can be viewed in full screen with MPlayer. Additionally, MPlayer supports displaying through some hardware, MPEG decoder boards like the Siemens DVB, DXR2 and DXR3/Hollywood+.

Status information is easily displayed through the OSD or Onscreen Display of MPlayer. Nice big shaded subtitles and visual feedback are incorporated for keyboard controls. The fonts that are supported by MPlayer are European/ISO 8859-1,2 (Hungarian, English, Czech, etc), Cyrillic and Korean fonts along with 12 subtitle formats.

MPlayer comes with a GUI that is not built by default. Alternative GUIs can also be provided by several external MPlayer front-ends.

MPlayerplug-in is a browser plugin used to play digital media in MPlayer downloading from websites.

This plug-in provides ability to play media from a website on the net without reading the source html and getting the URL manually. Media is played embedded in the page or in a separate window depending on how the author of the web page intended the media to be seen.
