NEdit is a multipurpose text editor for the X Window System, combined with a standard, easy-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI) with thorough functionality and stability for the users. NEdit provides intensive support for development in a wide variety of languages, text processors, and other tools.

NEdit is a standard GUI style text editor for programs and plain text files. It provides all the standard menus, dialog, editing, mouse support as well as all the short cuts to which the users of modern GUI based are familiar. NEdit is the primary editor for thousands of UNIX and VMS programmers and it features very complex functionalities like keystroke efficiency, fast response time and streamlined interaction with competent and proven command set. The GUI offers mouse-based editing, secondary/quick action selections, fully integrated rectangular selections, interactive WYSIWYG dragable selections and maximum compatibility with X, Motif and inter-client protocols.

NEdit is easy to install with self-contained single executable file. Pre-built tested executables are available for Silicon Graphics, Sun (Solaris & Sun OS), HP, Digital UNIX, Ultrix, IBM AIX, Linux and VMS systems.

NEdit is open source and free software and entirely a volunteer effort. The source code of NEdit is freely distributed under the terms of GNU General Public License. The current stable version of this software is NEdit 5.5.
