Linux is an open source operating system originally developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Since it is an open source operating system, the source code is freely available to everybody throughout the world over the Internet. This software has been developed under GNU General Public License and is considered as a revolutionary operating system in the world of computers.

The Kernel is the heart of Linux system, based on which Linux is developed. Linux is not only popular as freely available software, its functionality, adaptability and robustness is incredible. Technology giants like IBM, Hewlett-Packard etc. have embraced Linux as a versatile operating system for server platform. However, Linux is also becoming popular as home and office desktop operating system.

Linux is easily identified with its official mascot TUX, the Linux penguin.
